Welcome to 8th grade ELA!

Bom dia! My name is Mr. Vis (vee). I am thrilled to serve as the 8th grade English Language Arts teacher at Compass Academy! This is my first year teaching secondary school, but I have worked at the University of Texas Permian Basin teaching ENGL 1301, 1302, 2322, and 2327. I’m a Midland native, but a lot of my family is from Odessa. I am blessed to be at Compass with my family, Matthew, Mikey & Ari!

I hold a BA in Communication & Spanish and an MA in Spanish. Currently, I am a candidate for an MA in English at UTPB. I hope to graduate this forthcoming summer 2022. I am also excited to publish my first scholarly, peer-reviewed article over Harry Potter!

Before Compass, I worked in coffee locally and as Costumer / Wardrober. I was an avid volunteer at Midland Community Theatre – y'all might have seen some of my costume designs at Summer Mummers (pre-pandemic)! I’ve worked in Opera and the Theatre Arts across the county. So, it’s safe to say that I am passionate about the performance of texts.

Educational Philosophy

My teaching stems from the belief that literature enriches life through its complexity. Literary studies are not strictly restricted to the bindings of a book but blossom into an examination of the audience’s identity and subjectivity. I embrace the many facets of literature and its sister arts as a means to actively engage and empower my students to actualize their potential.
